A case of “Figures Don't Lie, But Liars Do Figure”?

The numbers Dr. Kelberman gave to the Oneida County IDA on December 20, 2020 appear to be off. He states his MOB was eyeing…

“A $1B market for cardiac care, and we’re planning to grow this by 20-30% over the next few years. That’s an additional $200-$300M in high-tech jobs here, right in downtown, where we want them. That is what’s at stake here.”

However, looking at total area hospital revenue in 2019…

St. Elizabeth Medical Center
$222,943,806

Faxton St. Luke’s
$309,509,024

Rome Hospital
$89,527,074

Little Falls Hospital
$35,143,932

Oneida Hospital
$105,929,295

The five hospitals’ total revenues:

$222,943,806
$309,509,024
$89,527,074
$35,143,932
$105,929,295
——————-------
$763,053,131

That’s 3/4 of a billion, not a billion dollar market. PLUS, these figures are for TOTAL hospital revenue from five area hospitals.

Cardiac care is a fraction of total hospital revenue. Perhaps if “they” grabbed the WHOLE market (meaning non-MVHS hospitals closed in the area) AND “they” grew market by 25%, then NEW total hospital revenue would reach close to a billion…

$953,816,413.75

So, is MVHS (and the new MOB) looking to shutdown other area hospitals? It’s highly unlikely. However, if cardiac care was 20% of MVHS’s two hospitals…

St. Elizabeth Medical Center + Faxton St. Luke’s, that's...

$222,943,806 + $309,509,024 = $532,452,830

20% of $532,452,830 = $106,490,566

If that figure is grown by 25%, it becomes $133,113,208, or an increase of $26,622,642. $26.6M is nice, but a very far cry from an increase of "$200M to $300M in new, high-tech, downtown jobs."

Dr. Kelberman, Utica, NY

Seems if Dr. Kelberman is pushing for eminent domain he’d be more careful to use truthful numbers. Wondering if anyone at the Oneida County IDA fell for his numbers? Also, did Ms. Darlene help him do the figuring?

[NOTE: We neglected Community Memorial Hospital (Hamilton, NY) in the above figures. It's likely some Madison County residents might be nearer and seek care in Utica. Hamilton Hospital's 2019 reveunes were $47,518,402, this amount might be worth adding to figures above, but would not greatly impact the point being made regarding Utica's cardiac care market.]
